Slovo scam určite poznáte, znamená podvod, podfuk. Rada sa s vami podelím o informácie, ktoré budú možno skôr zaujímať našich doktorandov, ale príspevok nie je určený len im. Dnes to bude trošku dlhšie čítanie.
Šmejdi neobchádzajú ani akademický svet a zrejme sa im celkom darí. V novembri 2019 som dostala nasledovný e-mail:

Obsah sa sčasti podobal na tisíce iných pozvánok na konferenciu, téma síce trochu priširoká, ale určite zaujímavá, slovo “molestation“ sa do tohto kontextu veľmi nehodilo. Predstava letenky zadarmo do USA a zaujímavej konferencie bola však veľmi lákavá! Podľa prvotných informácií bolo treba zaplatiť len ubytovanie. Bolo by to krásne …. keby to bola pravda. Poznáte výraz ‘red flag‘? Bolo ich tam niekoľko. Napríklad adresa odosielateľa.

Delegates are accepted to participate together as a group of 2 to 7 persons from each organization or you can also participate as an individual if you don’t have a group. The independent donors and the organization sponsors are responsible for participants traveling documents (Visa) application processing and round-trip flight tickets to attend the conference and there will also be translators present at the conference for all major languages. Please note that participants will only be responsible to pay for their hotel accommodation charges with the recommended hotel.
Your registration file will be open after we have received your filled registration forms A and B and your hotel booking confirmation receipt. You are to contact the hotel management immediately and make your room booking to secure your hotel accommodation. We shall send you an official invitation letter immediately after the confirmation of your registration to enable you obtain the U.S visa to participate in this event. Your visa documents will be processed here in United States and the approval letter of your visa will be sent to the U.S Embassy in your country and an appointment date given to you for the collection of your visa.
All participants are requested to make a paper presentation on the event topics which is “Human Trafficking, Women Molestation, Corruption and Political Instability: A Challenge to Economic Growth” as it affects your society, for all documentation will be published by the Universal Equality and Human Rights Organization (UEHRO) and certificate will be given to all participants as a representative of 2020 conference meeting.

Note: immediately after your registration file is opened, your registration documents will be forwarded to the U.S Bureau of Immigrant Affairs (Visa Processing Office) here in United States for the authorization and approval of your visa documents before faxing the visa documents to U.S Embassy (Consulate Office) in your country of resident and you shall be called by the Embassy for visa appointment date to secure your visa for the conference meeting.

TL;DR – Zaplatíte ubytovanie v jednom konkrétnom hoteli do určitého dátumu a je to!
Toto už znelo extrémne podozrivo, preto som začala gúgliť a zistila nasledovné:
- Webová stránka organizácie bola veľmi všeobecná, nebolo mi vôbec jasné, čím presne sa zaoberajú, ale bol to sofistikovaný podvod – bola graficky a obsahovo pomerne kvalitná.
- Obrázky hotela na webstránke boli ukradnuté zo stránky berlínskeho hotela, hotel s takým názvom v Dallase nebol.
- Na danej adrese Google Street View zobrazil garáže, žiaden luxusný hotel.
- V prílohe e-mailu bol formulár s veľmi osobnými údajmi, tento typ informácií zvyčajne organizátori konferencií nevyžadujú. Navyše žiadali sken pasu.
- Text obsahoval gramatické chyby.
Bol to jasný podvod, ako veľa iných online, zarazilo ma však koľko námahy naň podvodníci vynaložili, aby to celé vyzeralo hodnoverne.
V akademickom svete sa vyskytuje množstvo podvodov, počuli ste už o predátorských časopisoch a konferenciách? Verím, že určite áno, (napríklad na hodinách akademického písania v angličtine:)). Tento článok pekne sumarizuje informácie o tomto type konferencií:

Tieto konferencie tiež zvyknú uvádzať mená známych rečníkov, ktorí pochopiteľne o svojej účasti nič netušia.
Neznámu konferenciu si preto dobre preverte a hlavne použite veľa zdravého rozumu/kritického myslenia.
